As part of their homework, Maddy and Brock were to design a container for the traditional science experiment of seeing what packing material can protect an egg from a fall off the roof. We decided to do a dry run, with all three kids making their own designs and one thrown in by me as well. (Brought back memories of Curt’s project he did in middle school with the foam mushroom-where did we get that from anyway?)
We arranged to use our neighbors' (Jennifer and Howard) house for the launch. They were more than willing to oblige. After round one off the second story porch, they even took the screen off of their third story bedroom so we could try it there. We had a 60% success rate, and tons of fun doing it. Packing peanuts worked well, foam did not. Mom used clown’s balloons to form an atom looking model, which bounced and the egg remained intact.
For the official drop at school, Maddy chose to use her parachute model which is her Easter basket tied to a garbage bag. Brock stuck with the packing peanuts in a plastic bag, and Dane went for the balloons.

Levi and his 4th grade buddy packed their egg inside a grapefruit with success!
