Brock participated in his first Math Olympiad. He joined the 4th grade team (though he is in 2nd grade) and competed against several regional schools at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines, WA. Brock was the top point earner for his school and took 4th place overall, missing 1st place by two points. Unfortunately his team did not qualify for state, so he will have to wait until next school year before participating again. He especially enjoyed the college bowl-style format of questions where two teams competed against each other in a series of questions and the first one to buzz in got to answer the question. Family members were also able to watch the Mental Math round where each person on the 4-person team answered four questions in turn while only solving the answers in their head. There were several other rounds where no one but the participants and judges were allowed in the room, including a 40-question individual test. At the end of the competition, individual school top point earner shirts, individual overall trophies, and team trophies were awarded.
