Volcano Facts:

  • It's located on the island of Heimaey, southwest of the main part of Iceland.
  • It erupted without warning just outside the town of Heimaey on January 23, 1973. All the people on the island were evacuated.
  • Eldfell means Fire Mountain in Icelandic.
