Volcano Facts:

  • It's located in Washington State, USA.
  • Erupted May 18, 1980 at 8:22 AM. Ash fell as far away as Oklahoma. 57 people died, including Spirit Lake resident Harry R. Truman, photojournalist Reid Blackburn and vulcanologist David Johnson.
  • It is is named for British diplomat Alleyne Fitzherbert, 1st Baron St Helens.
  • Mount Saint Helens and Lassen Peak of California were the only two volcanoes in the Cascades mountain range to erupt during the 20th century.
